HANLON FAMILY HISTORY

Posted by on July 13, 2013

Harold and Kate Hanlon were born and raised in Washington County, Ohio where they met and later married on August 23, 1938. Their two sons, Dave and Don, were born in New Matamoras, Washington County, Ohio in 1939 and 1941 respectively. The family then relocated to Tuscarawas County where their daughter, Kaye, was born at Union Hospital in Dover, Ohio in 1943.

The family resided in a home located below the Goshen Church of the Nazarene with the David Zeisberger sign beside it. As they were sitting on their front porch, family members would wave to all who passed by.

After Harold’s death in 1994, Kate sold their home and moved in with her daughter, Kaye (and Jack) Walton, also on Goshen Valley Drive where she passed away in 2002. Kate was instrumental in founding the Goshen Community Yard Sales and Picnic and was chosen for the Goshen Neighbor of the Year Award in 2000.

Dave married Patricia Marion and divorced; then later raised two step-children, Michelle and Jason Malterer in New Philadelphia while Don (and Bonnie) raised their family of four, Michael, Dawn, Starr and Steven, in Laurel, Maryland (between Baltimore and Washington, DC.) LaVonne “Bonnie” is a native of Pennsylvania. In later years Dave married Jane Murphy who had two grown children.

Kay’s four children: Kathryn, Brenda, John III, and Harold Walton were raised in New Philadelphia and Goshen, Ohio.

The grandchildren have married and are raising their families in a variety of locations: Kathryn married James Cummings and has sons, Zachary and Daniel who graduated from nearby Dover High School; Brenda married James Harding and has sons, Jeremiah and David, who graduated from New Philadelphia High School; John III and his second wife, Jodie Costa, raised his two sons, John IV and Matthew, who graduated from Claymont High School in Uhrichsville, Ohio. Harold and his wife, Cynthia Kinnen, raised her son, Brandon Miller, in Tuscarawas and he graduated from Indian Valley High School. Michelle is married to Brad Moore and is raising three children, Christopher, Kayleigh and Nicholas in Gnadenhutten, Ohio.

Michael Hanlon died at the age of 22 without marrying; Dawn married twice and has three children from first marriage to Kevin Wood: Tamara, Lindsay and Matthew who graduated from Old Mill High School in Millersville, Maryland; and three children from her second marriage to John Bassford: Schuyler, Marina and Xander who are attending Glen Burnie High School in Maryland. Starr also married twice (Aaron Hertz and Victor Hyatt). Her daughter, Michaela, graduated from Greenbrier High School in Evans, Georgia; son, Braden, is attending Overhills High School in Spring Lake, North Carolina while daughter, Sofia Hyatt, is attending Overhills Elementary School also in Spring Lake, North Carolina. Son, Steven, married Tracey Wilkie of New Jersey and their sons, Emerson and Liam, are being raised in Millersville, Maryland.

Into the next generation: Great-granddaughter, Tamara Wood married Robert Geida and has two children, Melani and Gavin. They live in Dundalk, Maryland; great-granddaughter, Lindsay Wood is working as a scientist for the Maryland State Health Department. She lives in Severn, Maryland; great-grandson, Matthew Wood attends college and works in Maryland–he also resides in Severn. The other great-grandchildren from Don’s branch are all still attending schools as mentioned above.

Jeremiah and Courtney Harding have a daughter named Olive; Zach and Jeanette Cummings have a son, Jackson; and Brandon and Amanda Miller have a daughter named Harper.

The Hanlon Homestead on Goshen Valley Drive is scheduled to be torn down in the fall of 2013.
